Wedding bells rang for the longest serving member of The Firs Club staff in September 2005 when Monica married Gerry. They have known each other since childhood. The wedding took place at The Salvation Army with the reception at The Firs Club, followed by a honeymoon in Austria.
It was a beautiful sunny day and everything went according to plan. Around 150 guests joined Monica and Gerry to celebrate their big day. The bride was given away by her son Paul, and the groom's best man was his son Craig.
Although Monica had not intended having bridesmaids, a surprise was in store in the shape of Sarah, a 30 year old donkey. When it comes to animals, Monica's passion is donkeys.

This was organised by the photographer, Jan, who is a close friend of Monica and Gerry.
Another surprise was an extra cake. Harry, who made the official wedding cake, knowing that they both like Mickey Mouse, decided to make a second cake with Mickey and Minnie on it.
The third surprise left Monica totally speechless for only the second time in her life, the first being when Gerry asked her to marry him. As the best man was reading the cards during the reception, the words read 'To Monica and Gerry, Congratulations from Cliff Richard'. This had been organised by another friend, Maureen, knowing they both, especially Monica, enjoy Cliff's music. Three months later, this was followed by a signed wedding photo from Cliff. Both these items are now kept strictly under lock and key.

Firs Squash Final 2004
The final was played on Tuesday 11 January 2005 between Roger [The Glove] Nicolson and David [The Whippet] Thompson. In a very keenly contested match Dave took the 1st game 15-12 after being behind 1-6 at one stage. But "The Glove" clawed his way back to take the 2nd game 15-13, always having the slightly upper hand in some long rallies. The vital 3rd game could have gone either way with Dave having match ball at one stage, Roger however clinched the game and match 17-15 with a number of deceptive boasts and drives. The trophies were presented by Julie Coates [allegedly Miss Firs 1960!]. |

CLUB
NEWSLETTER
We expect most of you would by now have discovered through the local media that
Malcolm Nobbs has sold the Firs Club on the 17th November last.
Our initial endeavours are to replace and upgrade fitness equipment and generally introduce such items that will make a visit to the Club even more pleasurable. It should be said at this stage we have no plans or intension of increasing membership rates or changing the Firs to what has traditionally been a very popular and successful family run fitness club.
The staff are wonderful and we a delighted they have decided to remain loyal to the members by staying on. With such a wealth of experienced instructors we feel a valued contribution on our part would be to focus on improving other areas of the club for example expanding the crèche facilities to cover weekends and free the parents a few valuable hours to themselves.
We do hope we may bump into you in the gym in the New Year (our New Years resolution to get fit!). It only leaves us to wish you a very happy Xmas and a fit and healthy New Year.
Our best regards
Ron Rogers

Children In Need We decided to raise money for Children in Need and the idea of a 12 hour spinathon was born. Club members were asked to donate some of their time to take part in the challenge and help raise money. Initially only one spinning bike was going to be used continuously for the 12 hour period but as the event proved popular we introduced a second bike. Members and staff rode the bikes for 12 hours solid and people were asked to drop money into a bucket to show their support. The fitness staff dressed up in school uniform to make the day a bit more fun. At the end of the 12 hours the money was counted and we were pleased to raise the sum of £335.43. A big thank you to all the members that took part and for everyone who donated some money to us. |

The club's 2004 Squash Competition will be held throughout the summer. To enter please leave your name and a £2 entry at reception. This must be paid when entering. Once all the names are in, players will be matched up for games and a list left in the foyer of who will be playing who. Games will then need to be arranged and played within a set time. Moonwalk
Marathon
Congratulations to
our Firs ladies who raised almost £350 for charity.
This year's 26.2 mile Moonwalk Marathon was on the
night of 10th/11th May and started at 11.30 pm. Large
crowds saw them off and there were plenty of people
around all night to cheer them on.
Toilet stops were a problem. There were very long
queues for these stops and one of our ladies is reported
to have answered an emergency call of nature behind
a car by Buckingham Palace!
Sharon Morgan took 9 1/2 hours
to complete the walk. She says that the worst part
of the walk for her was around "11 miles"
when she started to feel tired and it was quite cold.
Fortunately after this she got a second wind. Apart
from the soles of her feet and her thighs, Sharon
says she did not have too many aches and pains afterwards
and would definitely do it again.
The worst bit of the walk for Margaret Sargeant was
the last two miles but her daughter, Claire, stopped
her giving up. Mum and daughter passed the finishing
line at 9.15 am with Margaret then winning the competition
for the loudest snorer on the coach back to Folkestone.
Apart from sore knees and a blister on a little toe,
Margaret says she feels better than she thought she
would.

Spotlight on Firs staff 1 - Margaret Sargeant
Club
members may think that we have two identical twins as Miss
Versatile, Margaret Sargeant, dashes from one job in the
club to another. You may spot her behind reception, busy cleaning
(does she have to spend so long in the Men's changing rooms?)
or working in the Accounts Office. An enthusiastic member
of the gym- maybe she now plans to add a Fitness Instructor's
job to her repertoire.
Margaret hails from Motherwell. After marrying Kelvin, the
happy couple headed south and spent a year in Maidstone, followed
by four years in Aldershot where Margaret managed a pet shop-excellent
early training for the Firs! After four years in Germany,
Margaret and Kelvin, by then with children, Russel and Claire,
finally moved to the Mecca of the South-East, Folkestone.

members by these alterations. |
Firs Fitness Club Staff Christmas Dinner
The Christmas
party was a great occasion for staff to let their hair down
and eat and drink lots! Of course, for the rest of the year,
Firs staff follow a very healthy lifestyle! Father Christmas
paid a cheeky visit, dropping off loads of naff presents,
these included a rather fetching shopping trolley, which Julie
found, in a merry state, quite useful for getting her hubby
Mark home!
There were also two blow-up sheep-Jamie's blow-up sheep came
complete with a condom. (Of course, this was for the sheep's
protection) Other presents included some naughty chocolates,
a Tarzan thong and farting bear. The two sheep and all of
the staff had a great evening.

to dress up in a Halloween outfit. Spinning Bike Classes are
sweaty occasions at the best of times but with Halloween hats

Cherry who wore a black bin bag!. |

Firs Fitness Club Members Injured for More Than Two Months?
If you
have been injured and unable to use Firs Fitness Club for
a period greater than two months, you will receive more than
our sympathy! But you must carefully follow the following
procedure.
Write to Monica Ellender, Membership Administrator, Firs Fitness
Club. In your letter, briefly summarise your injury and advise
Monica of the date from which you have been unable to use
our Gym. You must not cancel your direct debit authority to
us.
When you are then able to resume using Firs Fitness Club,
write to Monica a second time advising her of the date when
you have been able to resume use of our Club. Monica will
then suspend requests for direct debit payments from your
bank account to cover a period equivalent to the period that
you have been unable to use the Gym, less your first 2 months
of injury.
Please remember, under no circumstances should you cancel
your direct debit authority. |
